LisaRobert G. (Mac)McAnally, 83, of Hampton passed away January 1, 2022.
He is survived by his sister, Marj McDonogh of Santa Rosa, CA.
Mac was born and raised in Ross, CA and graduated from Tamalpias HS in 1956.
Mac served 24 years in the USN serving aboard the USS Saipan-LHA2, USS Shenandoah-AD26, and the USS Iwo Jima-LPH2 along with other destroyers and transports. He saw action in Vietnam serving with Helicopter Attack Squadron HAL-3. When not assigned shipboard he served at a variety of installations including Trinadad BWI, Patuxent River, Norfolk NOB, and Yorktown Weapons Station where he retired in1980 as a Senior Chief Personnelman.
After retirement he worked 10 years for Food Lion on the Outer Banks and was caretaker for the Currituck Shooting club for a time. In retirement Mac kept in touch with his former shipmates as the Executive Director and Reunion Planner for the USS Iwo Jima LPH2/LHD7 Shipmates Organization. He held reunions for 19 years before stepping away in 2019. Mac was a friend of Bill W for over 43 years. His untiring devotion to AA helped countless others in their recovery programs. All of us who had the pleasure to know him and were helped by him will miss Mac. As per Mac’s wishes he will be cremated followed by burial at sea.
